Materials

This page gives details of the materials which can be used in UnconstrainedTime watches.

Note that not every material is suitable for each watch design. For example, some designs only make sense with a smooth metal surface, so we’d not make them available with one of the grainy materials.

Metals:

Gold.

Silver.

Sand-blasted silver. A matt, slightly grainy finish.

Blackened silver. This material has a grainy texture, ideal for organic concepts.

Bronze.

Copper (only available for parts which don’t come into contact with your skin).

Brass (only available for parts which don’t come into contact with your skin).

Platinum.

Aluminium.

Black anodised aluminium. A relatively matt black surface.

Anodised titanium. Vivid cyans, blues, golds and purples. The exact pattern of colors might be slightly different for each watch.

Steel.

Oil blackened steel. A slightly uneven dark finish, ideal for mechanical concepts.

Steel and Bronze. A grainy bronze and steel 3D printed material, available from Shapeways, with bronze, gold, nickel, bronzed-Silver, or black finishes. Ideal for organic shapes. Note that the dimensions of components printed in steel/bronze might be slightly larger than in other materials.

Patinas.

Bronze, copper and brass can be treated in various ways, resulting in a wide variety of colors. These finishes are likely to be somewhat uneven (sometimes deliberately so), and typically with a slightly grainy texture. The color will be slightly different each time. They are ideal for organic concepts. We show available patina colors for bronze, below, since copper and brass can only be used for parts which do not touch the skin with normal use.

Here is an example of the texture of patina:

Woods:

Most hardwoods can be used for the parts of UnconstrainedTime watches which are made of wood. Different woods have different colors and grains, and each piece of wood will be unique. The woods will be finished by an artisan, using scrapers as used in making fine violins, and finished with a linseed oil finish, as seen on the neck of the best violins.

Note that some woods will change color over time. For example, various hardwoods typically darken with age.

If you want to use custom materials, you must contact us before purchasing, since different materials (and the processes necessary to manufacture, treat and ship them) might result in different watch prices and shipping times.
